Driving SME Growth

UK sustainable finance offers every SME should know about

The growing sustainable finance industry provides critical capital to address pressing global issues, but many business owners make the common mistake of assuming these funds are only available to larger businesses. This is not true. By aligning profit and sustainability, your business can unlock powerful financial opportunities.

Green bonds and loans are trusted tools to fund companies for their sustainability projects and performance. Globally, it’s been projected that green bonds and loans will grow to £518 billion in 2026 (Source).

Today, five major UK lenders offer sustainable finance specifically designed for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). While most lenders focus on green loans for specific eco-friendly assets, a select few are now offering loans linked to your business's overall sustainability performance.

Before you approach a bank, it is good to know the difference:

  • Green loans fund specific sustainable purchases, such as solar panels, electric vehicles, and heat pumps. They offer small, clear rewards like rate cuts, waived fees, or cash back.
  • Sustainability-linked loans reward your overall business performance rather than specific asset purchases.

Tip: Don't pitch to these lenders empty-handed. Banks and impact investors require proof, not just promises. Before you apply for a green loan or a performance-linked discount, ensure your ESG strategy, metrics, and carbon data stand up to due diligence.

1) Barclays

Barclays provides accessible funding for businesses looking to invest in smaller green assets.

  • Product type: Green Loan.
  • Borrowing range: £5,000 - £25,000.
  • Main benefit: Borrowers can access up to a 0.3% rate discount, which is the highest published interest rate cut among the major lenders.
  • What they look for: SMEs making specific eco-friendly purchases under £25,000.

2) Lloyds Bank

Lloyds offers the Clean Growth Financing Initiative to help businesses transition to a lower-carbon economy.

  • Product type: Green Loan.
  • Borrowing range: £25,001+.
  • Main benefit: They offer either no fee or a 0.25% rate discount. Waiving fees can save businesses vital upfront cash on smaller borrowing.

3) HSBC UK

HSBC stands out by offering three distinct sustainability products, making it the only lender offering performance-linked options directly to smaller businesses.

  • Product types:
  • What they look for: Businesses of all sizes, from those needing £1,000 for a minor green upgrade, to certified B Corps borrowing over £300,000.

4) NatWest

NatWest provides targeted green loans and green asset finance to support environmental initiatives.

  • Product type: Green Loan.
  • Borrowing range: £25,000 - £10m.
  • Main benefit: They charge no arrangement fee, saving upfront cash for the borrower.

5) Triodos Bank

Triodos is a pioneer in ethical banking and a certified B Corp itself, aligning its own operations with high ethical standards while focusing on financing initiatives that deliver positive environmental and social impacts.

  • Product type: Ethical Loan.
  • Borrowing range: £100,000 - £20m.
  • What they look for: You should use Triodos Bank if your core business mission actively drives positive environmental impact. They provide access for highly impactful projects.

Recommendations for SMEs

Choosing the right lender depends heavily on your loan size and business goals. Keep in mind that while green loans offer clear and measurable savings, sustainability-linked loans are tailored to each business, meaning you must speak directly with the bank to learn about specific benefits.

For purchases under £25,000

  • Apply to Barclays for smaller asset loans.
  • Consider HSBC Go Greener for 1% cash back on small loans.

For borrowing between £25,000 and £500,000

  • Compare Barclays, Lloyds, and NatWest for medium loans.
  • Barclays offers the highest published interest rate cut.
  • NatWest and Lloyds waive fees, which saves upfront cash on smaller borrowing.

For businesses with a sustainability certificate looking for larger loans

If you are a company with a sustainability certificate, such as a B Corp certification, you can unlock specialised funding.

  • Ask HSBC about B Corp discounts if you are borrowing over £300,000.
  • Use Triodos Bank if your core business mission drives positive environmental impact.

(Note: Rates and availability change frequently; this research reflects August 2026 rates. While discounts are small, the largest benefits could ultimately be better terms of repayment.)
