How to master NHS Evergreen and outshine corporate giants

For any UK-based SME looking to supply the healthcare sector, sustainability is now mandatory.

With the NHS committing to become the world’s first net-zero national health service by 2040, the procurement landscape has shifted. If you want to secure or retain contracts, you need to navigate the NHS Evergreen framework.

The good news? This isn't just a compliance hurdle. It is a massive opportunity for agile SMEs to outshine larger competitors by demonstrating authentic social value and environmental leadership.

You can definitely do this with the right support.

What is the NHS Evergreen framework?

Think of the NHS Evergreen framework not as a hurdle to jump, but as your brand’s new competitive superpower. This isn’t just another reporting tool; it’s the NHS’s official VIP pass for suppliers who actually walk the talk on net-zero, modern slavery and social value.

By diving into the Evergreen maturity matrix, you’re doing way more than filling out a form. You’re securing a Maturity Score (from Level 1 to 4) that acts as a beacon to NHS procurement teams. It tells them - loud and clear - that you aren’t just a supplier; you’re a high-value, future-proof partner ready to help them build a healthier planet.

It’s time to move past compliance and start leading the pack.

5 strategic actions for NHS suppliers
1. Benchmark against the maturity matrix

The Evergreen Framework is designed to be inclusive of SMEs. You don’t need to be perfect on day one. Use the Evergreen maturity matrix to assess where you currently stand. Whether you are just starting to measure carbon (Level 1) or are already influencing your entire supply chain (Level 4), the matrix allows you to set a pace that fits your business capacity.

2. Publish a compliant Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP)

Since April 2024, the NHS has required a Carbon Reduction Plan for all contracts with an annual value exceeding £5 million. However from 6 April 2026 all suppliers submitting tenders will be required to have achieved Evergreen Level 1 at the point of tender close.

Action: Start by calculating your baseline emissions. You can find a free tool here for a simple calculator.

3. Lean into Social Value (often the SME superpower)

The NHS doesn't just care about carbon; it cares about the "S" in ESG. Under the Social Value Model (PPN 06/20), at least 10% of the marks in NHS tenders are awarded based on social value.

  • Action: Highlight your local UK impact - whether it’s supporting mental health, hiring from local communities, or promoting diversity. This is where SMEs often have a more compelling story than multinational giants.

4. Align with the NHS supplier roadmap

The NHS roadmap is clear: by 2030, suppliers will only be able to qualify for contracts if they can demonstrate progress through the Evergreen portal. Getting ahead of these deadlines now gives you a significant first-mover advantage in upcoming tender cycles.

  • Action: Prepare your business case to share at board level what your commitment is going to be and over what time-frame. The higher the level you aspire to, the greater the complexity, investment and impact across your triple bottom line.

5. Transparency as a competitive edge

NHS procurement teams value honesty. Use the Evergreen portal to share your challenges and your wins. Being transparent about your journey from a Level 1 to a Level 2 provider builds more trust than a polished brochure with no data to back it up. You will also gain credibility and buy-in within your business.

  • Action: Craft your internal and external communications plan. Agree what you will and won’t say - remember that fortune favours the brave!

Why this matters for your growth

Meeting NHS sustainability requirements isn't just about doing good - it’s about commercial resilience:

  • Win more tenders: Score higher on the Social Value and Net Zero sections of your bids.
  • Future-proof your business: Aligning with NHS standards prepares you for the inevitable roll-out of similar requirements across other UK public sector bodies and other segments,
  • Attract talent: Top talent in the UK increasingly wants to work for businesses that have a clear purpose beyond profit.
